Humminbird ICE-55 Review
- bright display
- battery life
- digital display
- carrying case
- transducer cord
- cord management
After reading reviews for ice fishing flashers I narrowed my choices down to a Vex FL-18, a Marcom LX-5 and the fish finder Hummingbird Ice-55. The reviews basically said that they are all good and it is a matter of personal preference. I chose the Ice-55 because I thought it had more options than the others. I like the liquid crystal display for depth and the back lighting is good in dark conditions. I really haven’t used the 6 colors as three works just fine. The case is a nice thing to have and the handle on top makes it easy to carry although I have read that it can be easily broken. The only drawback I can see from the other flashers is the float setup. It works fine but having two cords in the water does not give a lot of room for bringing up fish. The Marcom seems to that the best setup with an adjustable arm that swings out. Of course the purpose of the second cord is to protect the transducer cord. The Marcum hangs for that cord which could shorten the life of the unit. I also seem to adjust the gain more than I would like. I cannot speak for other makes since I have not used them. The gain runs from 0-50 and I will adjust it somewhere from 20-40 and any given day. Overall, I am more than satisfied with my purchase. I like the larger display and back lite options.
The LCD depth display is a great benefit. I have numerous ice buddies who have this same unit, and it’s got great reviews. I own other Humminbird units and they are also top notch. If you have the coin, and want the best, this unit is for you.
This is my first review. I like the display, I like the 6 colors, I like the features it has but there is one problem that is driving me nuts and that is the digital depth gauge. The read out on this unit is Erratic, The first day I took it out sat in 13 ft of water for an hour with no problems, but the second time out I was sitting in 26 ft of water and it would jump to a much higher reading then it will climb back down to 26 ft. This doesn’t happen all the time but maybe 5 to 7 times in 4 or 5 hours. So I thought to my self maybe it was the current.. Okay let go to a week later not in 40 ft of water. Same problem, I check the transducer to make sure it is level, check all of the connections, tried the depth in auto and manual mode, and even had a full charged battery.
So i tried another test this time in the DEMO mode that they used at the store.. Guess what in demo mode it says 12 ft of water, It will run through the frist demo mode fine but when is runs through the 2nd time then it jumps from 12 ft to whatever then back down to 12 ft in DEMO mode!!!! Not happy
I called the tech line they want me to send it in but I need to pay for the freight to ship it there! Well #1 I am in 3 tournaments for the next 3 weeks mainly the reason why I bought this thing. I can not sit here and wait a week to ship then a week for them to do what ever and a week to ship back. They wont send me a New one for a replacement Or even a replacement head unit… not happy!
I purchased this flasher for summer walleye fishing on my trips to Canada. I’ll be working to adapt the transducer for trolling and I’ll get it figured out. I can hardly wait. The seller was outstanding in delivering this flasher.
Fished with my Ice 55 for the first time and was very impressed. The zoom feature was excellent and I was almost playing with the fish as I would have them move up and down the screen after my minnow. Fished for 5 hours and battery only dropped 20%. What impressed me the most, I was able to tell when I lost my minnow after missing a fish in 20 ft of water. Very happy overall!
I’ve owned a Vexilar FL8SLT for the past 14 years. I got sick of getting schooled by other fisherman when going for browns, lake trout, and salmon on Lake Superior this winter due to the lack of zoom on my unit so I decided I was going to upgrade to a new flasher.
First, there is a review you’ll find out there that starts something like “This is a long read but if you’re going to spend $$ on a flasher.” Disregard that review. Its a fraud. You really have to watch out for folks who are “sponsored” as they are all over the web and do not give honest opinions.
I narrowed my exhaustive search down to three units. The Humminbird Ice 55, Marcum LX5, and Marcum LX6. I really like the look of the LX6 but ultimately could not afford one. So it was between the LX5 and the Ice 55 (45 really isn’t much different). Either of these are very good flashers. One reason I went with the Bird is the display. It’s huge! The biggest display on a flasher and the color palate is adjustable. The larger display makes fishing with a buddy in the shack easier when both are using the same unit. I also like the zoom feature on the bird which is adjustable and is not a split screen like the Vexilar or Marcum units. This unit also will go very deep which most other units cannot do. So, its easy to use, the display is great, zoom is awesome, dual beam cone is very handy. Though these are not the reasons I went with the bird. The deciding factor was that the Humminbird sonars run on a different frequency than other sonars so you can use them side by side with other sonars and have no interference issues either way. That’s a feature none of the other sonars can claim and when fishing in shacks with buddies is very valuable. I can honestly say that my friends are die hard Vexilar users FL12/FL20 and both of them after fishing with one of their friends who has an Ice 45 recommended the Humminbird flashers.
Our group has several in my family. love this. main complaint is that the Ft digital read out in center sometimes goes crazy and loses range. this is regardless of if we fish solo, or spread out. we typically are spaced 50-100 ft apart or farther for what we target(Cisco). i love hummingbird, but wish they had longer warranty than 1 year, as its not long enough for as expensive a toy as these are. also keep in mind, many anglers go out but once a year, and don’t put much wear on their toys(or boats), and no one does repair on these, too complex or something. this leaves bad taste long term. also we have noticed that each of our units do not behave the same. some reset to some factory default, some remember the previous settings. very expensive toy to be like this after a year.
Love everything about it. Works awesome. Helped me catch a 23 in walleye the first evening out. Showed me right where it was. Marcum running in the same house and I had no interference since these birds run off a different frequency. Went to a tournament and had a small amount due to another bird and a slight adjustment it was free and clear. Highly suggest this unit. Don’t use the cord and float setup. Either use the float with the cord in the middle or make yourself a nice little marcum arm. That’s what I did. Love it and will never part with it.
