MarCum Showdown 5.6 Review
- battery lifetime
- user friendly
- screen is easy to read
- wires weak
- poor Customer Service
I have used the MarCum Showdown 5.6 fish finder for 10 trips on the ice and i don’t believe i will use my vexilar fl8 again. The showdown preforms better and the adjustable zoom is amazing for bottom hugging and suspended fish. You will not regret buying this unit i used it 4 times without recharging the battery. The only con to this product is the arm that is used for stopping the transducer is made of plastic. I would suggest buying a vexilar type stop with a float from ebay for around $5 this will make this unit even better.
Got my wife (she loves ice fishing more than I do!) this for Christmas in 2011. Didn’t get to use it much the first winter. I just spent the entire weekend on the ice and this thing is great! The auto-range is pretty good, it seemed to want to go to 0-40 ft although the depth was only 18. The bottom lock zoom is amazing! The scrolling in the zoom is also great! The screen is clear and easy to see. Turn on the back light and you can see it in all weather and light conditions. I can’t say much about the ice mode, I was out is 5F weather and didn’t need it. It got faster when I did turn it on though.
The battery life was not an issue. I charged it every night, but never had any problems. My first day I only had it charged to about 11.5 Volt and lasted all day. My buddy had a LX-6 and that was really cool, but he used the vertical column with the zoom the most, which is exactly the same as the Showdown’s (except the LX-6 is color)! Can’t recommend this product enough!
I cant say enough about it . It is so easy to use I have increased the amount of fish I catch by a lot. Now if I drill a hole I can see if I should stay there or move on. My buddy has a flasher and in my humble opinion the showdown is so much easier to read.
This is a very good fish finder. I have used one for the past 3 seasons and never go ice fishing without it anymore. Up is up and down is down. Separation is very evident and easy to read. Sometimes it can pick up more clutter than you want, but the sensitivity is easily turned down. I bought a 2nd unit so people I go with could enjoy it also. Just beware that Amazon does NOT allow you to return the unit to them if it is defective (which mine was), because of some issue with the kind of battery it uses. You will have to contact MarCum directly for repair or replacement. I have contacted them about my unit and they are sending out a new head for it. I think Amazon needs to review their return policy, especially because this was sold BY Amazon..
The Showdown has very good battery life. I’ve gone a couple of full days without charging. The case is great for moving from hole to hole on the ice and the LCD screen is very easy to read even at subzero temperatures. It even has a built in screen heater so the LCD crystals don’t slow down.
You can easily see your jig move with every twitch of your wrist. When a fish is picked up on the screen, you simply move your jig or bait to the same depth as the fish which dramatically increasing your chances of catching them.
This is a great piece of equipment in a small package and I don’t leave home without it.
Definitely 5 stars!!
Works fine but I have to have the sensitivity setting at 10 just to see my jig and if the noise reduction is on at all the jig only shows when it’s moving and then not always. That’s not to impressive
My ice fishing partner happens to be my wife’s mother. She decided that she to wanted a fish finder for ice fishing. But keep it simple so she could understand what she was seeing. This fit the bill perfectly. She is now catching fish as fast as I am.
Holds up well in cold weather…the charge lasts for a few days of fishing….it is very easy to use and my friends whom recommended it to me have used it for years with no complaints
Really like this unit! Fished with 4 guys for 2 days and one of them had a velixar flasher. Both models worked great. We typically needed 15-20 feet separation to prevent distortion/interference. However, the showdown tuned this out a little easier than the velixar. After the trip, I’m very pleased with my purchase. While I liked the color display of the velixar, I liked the features and vertical display of the showdown more. I really spent a lot of time researching the features and truly feel this unit was easily the most bang for the buck at 299.00, especially with the dual cone and the carry case. Once we moved to deeper water (40-55 ft), the showdown 9 degree cone did better than the other unit which only had a larger cone. Any deeper than 60, I know I would definitely want a narrow 9 degree cone. So, for the traditionalist that must have a colored dial gauge reading, you may want to pass on this one. For the purchaser who wants both respected brand and “most bang for the buck”….my opinion, you can’t do better. Btw, the showdown with case fits into a 5 gallon bucket with room to spare.
Purchased my first Marcum product a Showdown 5.6. I under stood it was not state of the art , but had some great features, ton of power, great target separation and a zoom that is claimed to be infinitely adjustable. Turns out that when in zoom mode you get a 25% window of the full water column that you can move up or down. So in zoom you can not look at the bottom 50% (not infinitely adjustable). The operation manual clams the Company would bend over backwards to make you happy, Also not true. After a very long time on hold I talked to two customer service people, one said they are aware that the add is misleading but could do nothing for me. They both told me I had to deal with the retailer. I felt it was there problem not the Retailers. They made no attempt to resolve the problem. My retailer was very understanding and even paid to ship it back to them stating that they have had many complaints about Marcum’s customer service. Bottom line I will never buy another Marcum product. A company that misleads you knows it and does nothing to resolve the problem is off my radar.
