Marcum VX-1 Pro Ice Reviews:
I love it!
I bought my VX-1i new 3 seasons ago for $320 and as my first and only unit so far, I love it. I wish I had the cash when rapala was discontinuing them for very cheap but……that’s how it goes. I would have bought 2 more of them.
The bottom lock (5’) is nice and is always on if I’m over more than 10’ of water. I fish primarily tungsten jigs in sizes 3-5mm and have zero issue seeing my jig. I don’t have the issue of having to move my jig 2”-3” to see it represented on the screen. Mine is very responsive to jig movement and I would say it picks up my subtle jigging accurately. It definitely doesn’t need 2”-3” to register movement. Thin spoons are a different story but that’s just how sonar works.
The screen is nice and bright and the colors are crisp. I haven’t had to use the interference rejection yet.
If the electronics are still in good working order and the ducer isn’t shot, I’d say go for it. It’s worked out well for me the last few seasons and I don’t see it stopping any time soon.
I would place the VX1 between the FL8 and FL18. The vx1 had a 5′ bottom zoom similar tho the 6′ bottom zoom of the fl18. The vx1 does lack some sensitivity and you have to move your lure about 2-3″ to see the vx1 show that the lure has moved. This is due to less lines of resolution used by Marcum. The vx1 is significantly brighter though.
I have 2 fl18 and a vx1 and last season I found myself using the marcum more, specifically due to brightness and not needing to grab the transducer cable and unit to move holes as the marcum does not utilize a float but a holder arm. The arm holder allows less you have to hold on to, though the vex could be rigged with a holder arm.
this flasher works great. a great value for the price. a friend has a vexilar and the marcum vx-1 is a lot more sensitive and easy to use.
Ice fishing helper
Great ice fishing tool to help locate the fish. (Doesn’t cause them to bite though!) Wish the instruction booklet was a little clearer (pictures) on what you’re seeing on the screen. Good battery life and easy to recharge. Would strongly recommend it to others.
I’ve been on the fence for the last three years on whether or not I wanted to spring the money for a flasher and could not decide which one to buy. Well, I finally decided on the Marcum VX-1 due to the low price and zoom. I can now say with certainty that I am done with trap fishing! Jigging with the Marcum was a blast and definitely helped me catch more fish. The bottom zoom feature was way more useful than I thought it would be. I suggest watching some YouTube videos to understand the information that is displayed before heading out for the first time. The VX-1 is highly recommended.
my husband really loves this. he doesn’t know what he ever did without one. uses it ice fishing and also on the boat with the transducer mount I also got him
Fishing is Great
I had a vexlar 8—– I like the Marcum much better. Catching lots of fish here in Michigan this winter.
Great unit for the price
Before buying, I compared the Vexilar FL-8, Hummingbird Ice 35, and Marcum VX1-P. Vexilar had the time tested reputation but no features. Hummingbird on paper seemed to have the best feature set with adjustable zoom, fiber optic display, and dual beam transducer. Marcum had the highest peak power and a fixed zoom. I considered target separation for all three but at this price point they all seemed so close that it wasn’t enough to pick one over another for. I rarely fish in a crowd so noise rejection wasn’t a consideration either. I have had issues with other Hummingbirds I have had in the past, so I aimed for the middle with the VX1-P. After a week long first fishing trip with the VX1-P, I can say it truly was a “take it out of the box and use it” experience with a very short learning curve. The bottom zoom is easy to use and gives great detail of the bottom 5 feet (in 20 and 40 foot ranges). The only negative is that once zoom is turned on, you can’t toggle back and forth between zoom/no zoom. You have to restart the unit to turn zoom off. Enabling zoom requires a strong bottom signal and higher gain setting to get zoom lock, which you then have to turn down and fine tune for best performance. Not a complicated process but not something you really don’t want to do when chasing fish around the water column. If you want better zoom control the Hummingbird 35 may be better equipped for with it’s selectable zoom feature. The display was clear and bright. Battery life was as advertised (>12 hours). The soft-pack is easy to carry and seems to adequately protect the unit. For a basic, easy to use flasher, you can’t go wrong with this unit.
catch alot more
my friend has vexelar fl12 , i like the marcum its easy to read just a better package all in all
Highly Reccommend the Marcum VX-1 Pro
This is one sweet unit! I just wanted a basic flasher without alot of options I would never use. The Marcum VX1-Pro fit my every need. It’s ease of use and sensitivity are just amazing. Fishing in 15 1/2 feet of water, a red bar appeared at 13 feet, I raised my jig up to that level, gave it one slight twitch, and a 34″ northern was on for the ride. I would highly recommend the Marcum VX1-Pro for your fishing needs.
more fun fishing
The Marcum does exactly what I was hoping for. Has a very sharp color contrast and love the zoom-in feature once I learned how to read it. Great product for the money.
Great Unit for a Beginner to Internediate user
Unit is as advertised – take it out of the box, hook up the positive cable and you are set. Really easy to use and understand. I am a novice to ice fishing and this was a breeze to use, a huge benefit! I would watch their you tube videos as well, they really help.
I was looking for an introductory ice fishing flasher when I found this marcum. Can’t say how happy I am with it. Second fish out of the ice while using it was a master angler. Could have been luck but watching the fish rise to your lure is simply amazing. Great flasher!
work really good for the money
work just as good as my 600.00 dollar vexilar .
I bought it for my son he has caught a lot of fish with it
I have had this product for a couple of seasons now and must say it has performed more than well every time. As a well known company in the ice fishing world, Marcum has once again come through with a well designed and durable product.
I have owned and used one of these for over 10 yrs I love it and has never failed me. I bought this one for my son as gift. I like the simplicity of operation and use. I am not a fan of bell buttons and whistles on my sporting equipment. More to fail and go wrong in the field. Never had trouble in the field with this unit.
Great for the money!
It’s a great entry level flasher for the price. The bottom zoom feature is very nice and the only thing I need to get used to is all of the cord in the unit and keeping it untangled.
like it alot
works great. excellent product for the price. glad I got it. fun to see the fish come up to the bait
Find fish fast
Does an excellent job, even through the ice with a little water poured on top. Can see fish come to the bait.
i went on the ice and read depths through the ice it worked great! i also saw fish and my jig
Great flasher. Target separation is great. Used a humminbird ice 35 right next to my VX-1P and have to say it might have a smaller display but it’s sharper, little louder than the ice 35, comes with a great carrying case also! I am Completely satisfied.
Pefect for Ice Fishing
This is perfect for ice fishing, i went with this base model as i was new to ice fishing and didn’t want to spend the money on a fancy one yet, this one is super nice and i have done good with it.
Functions as advertised and helps improve fish catch
Functions great, but managing the extra cable is awkward. I have used the product about 10 times in 3 weeks in less than 20 ft of water while fishing panfish. The sensor if very sensitive. You can drop the transducer in an ice hole and instantly see the water depth, identify whether or not fish are below your hole. Putting your lure on the same plane as the fish is a tremendous advantage. It also allows you to tell when the fish approach the bait by color change on the flasher dial. Use of the device adds a whole new dimension to ice fishing. That definitely takes the bordem out of fishing when the bit is off. It is also fun to “see” the fish respond to your lure presentation. The zoom function provides fine resolution and allows differential of fish from bottom very near the bottom. It would be useful to have had information in the product user manual that tells the area (or diameter of the circular pattern) covered at various depths. So what does a 20 viewing degree angle mean at 20 ft water depth?
worth the money
I chose the marcum for the features offered for the price and am glad I did. I fish with a friend of mine who owns a more expensive competitors brand and the marcum performed as good if not better.
You'll love it!
Hello fellow fisherman, I bought this for myself for Christmas and I’ve been pulling bigguns ever since. You will never ice fish without one again it changes you. Easy to use, well made, better than the Vexillar 8 because of the zoom. Shipping was free and great price. I think I can even use it in summer. See fish through the ice too and depth saves time, just pour water on the ice and remove snow. No complaints, battery lasts forever (8 plus hrs) make your friends jealous haha… If you wife complains about the credit card bill just go fishing!!
I use this to ice fish and I think it is much nicer than a vexilar. You can see the “bleeps” on the screen and that tells you that there are fish around. Highly recommend!
Lots of fun finding fish and great family time with my children friends and grand children No regrets….
Great flasher for the money, bottom zoom works great for those bottom hugers. Much better than my Vexilar. Going to buy a second one.
I love my marcum
I love my marcum! Much better than vexilar fl-8. I have zoom and I fish with 3 and 4 others who also have marcums and we have little interference. U could never fish with 4 vexilar!
The best fishing equipment I have ever bought
Before the VX-1 Pro came out, I bought the plain VX-1, no Pro. I purchased the Marcum VX1 at fleet farm for $150 (50 dollar mail in rebate, regular $200). The only difference I noticed is the Pro comes with a softcase and that’s it. Everything else is the same, 1000 watts, peak power, etc. It was in 2002 I had purchase the VX-1, so about 12 years Ive had this unit. I swear this has been the best fishing equipment I have ever bought. I never had to replace anything. Battery life is still going strong and I do 6 to 10 hours of fishing per day, just charge it before you go. Like everyone else I have a fishing buddy, and Ive seen him go through a vexlir fl-8, he claimed it was my marcum giving him interference so I shut my marcum down for an hour, and he still had interference. He switched to a hummingbird 55 which was nice, but I think in his third time using the hummingbird, the wiring prongs that connects the sonar to the unit broke, just a poor desighn for an expensive unit, he used his warranty to replace it, A season later it broke again. He owns a marcum LC-3 I think now, no problems so far. I still have my VX-1 and its been through some rough handling 30 degrees below weather, and it still works like new. I eventually bought a marcum grey softcase for it. The Vx-1 unit is the same unit as the VX-1 Pro unit, I checked the specs, The Pro just came with a case. The price went up because Marcum realized they made a great product!!! I am buying this PRO unit for my girlfriend, The LCD stuff probably drains the battery life faster. If your looking for reliable fishing sonar, this is it. Just remember your first time using it, you might be confused, but I tell you what I’ve been with this machine for 12 years now and I know how to use it like riding a bike with no hands. I catch lots of fish with this, and I cant fish with out it.
I spent a while researching between the fl8 , ice35, and the vx1 pro. If i had the money, i would have purchased the ice35, but concluding that they all do almost the same thing, i bought the vx1 pro. First time out with it was a breeze. Fast set up easy to learn. Drop the transducer in the hole and it shows you the fish and lure! I dont think you can go wrong. They all do the same thing, but i dont need anything fancy. Buy this whether your a begginer or pro.
Great unit. Wires are kind of long for ice fishing. How about a shoulder strap?
Marcum showed up in a couple days and works great. i bought it for my son, now saving up to get one for myself.
I bought my marcum vx 1p in 2013. I was beginning to learn how to period ofit took me a very short period of time to begin to be able to use my Markham. I just got back from fishing at Shakamac state park, I took 32 blue gills and red ears from one hole! My largest fish was a 10 inch red hair which I may have mounted. So in answer to the question is the marcum vx 1p machine good I would definitely say it is extremely good you can’t go wrong with it.
Best unit for the price
I have fished with the Marcum vx-1 pro for two ice seasons now, and I couldn’t be more happy with it. I researched the Vexilar fl-8 and the Hummingbird 15, but the Marcum vx-1 pro did more for the money. The bottom zoom feature was the selling point between the the other brands and it works great. It is especially nice for when fishing in deeper water for perch and walleye; but with the dial splitting in two parts, you can also see the suspended crappie riding higher in the water column. The gain can be adjusted light enough to read your smallest jigs in the deepest water without distorting the bottom signal. I have been able to read a 1/64 ounce jig six inches off the bottom in 35 feet of water, and be able to read perch tight to the bottom. There is also an anti-interference button which cancels out the signal interference coming from other flasher units, but I have rarely had to use this feature. The battery lasts all day, and then some. The charger provided works very well; it allows me to charge overnight without the fear of ruining the battery. Another nice feature is the soft carry case which keeps all wires inside and free from tangles. It also helps to keep snow out of the unit while traveling. Overall, this is a great product and I would recommend, and have recommended, it to anyone looking for a lost cost, high quality unit.
This is an excellent product at a good price
This is an excellent product at a good price. Before I had this fish finder I was just guessing where the fish were. Now I can see withing 15-20 minutes if there are fish in the area or not. It’s also very convenient to see your jig on the screen and also how the fish react to your presentation. THIS PRODUCT HAS HELPED ME CATCH MORE FISH! Sure you can get the extremely high dollar models but this one has not lead me astray yet and I have fished two seasons on the ice with it. Very easy to set up and has a 12 hour battery life. I have nothing but good things to say about this product and would HIGHLY recommend.
Have had it for close to three years and it works great. Works great around other sonars and east to read with zoom/colors.
